Are you ready to rumble today? To go fly a kite, or do the Time Warp again? Whatever you choose, I challenge you to say ‘Let’s…’ to at least one other person.

Today, 19 July, is supposed to be Freedom Day. I’m cynical, and still a bit cautious about venturing out and getting close to people. I haven’t hung my face covering up just yet. But I do think we can start allowing ourselves to make plans.

I’ve been thinking about the little phrase ‘Let’s…’ and how uplifting it can be. It means that the other person has thought about you and something you might like to do together. They have written, or picked up the phone to invite you.

If I sing Let’s’ or Let us’ to you, what do you sing back? Here’s my top ten, in no particular order:

  • go fly a kite
  • all go down the Strand
  • all get up and and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born
  • face the music and dance
  • do the Time Warp again
  • (with a gladsome mind) praise the Lord for He is kind
  • get physical
  • get ready to rumble
  • have another cup of coffee, let’s have another piece of pie
  • misbehave

We haven’t had a lot of opportunity to Let’s anything lately, so let’s make this Let’s Day. I challenge you to phone or email someone you haven’t been in touch with for a while. Suggest something. Arrange it. Even if they say ‘Do you mind, but I’d rather not just yet?’ or ‘Sorry, my diary’s filling up really quickly!’ at least they know you care about them and have made the effort.  Let me know how you get on. But let’s please stay safe and sensible.

Play > Let’s do it (The ballad of Barry and Freda) > Victoria Wood

The best advocate for Let’s was Freda, created by the late great Victoria Wood. Freda had a terrifying libido the size of Yorkshire, but Barry’s was a bit more Isle of Wight. He was more concerned with unfinished household tasks than with smearing an avocado on Freda’s lower portions. But she certainly made the effort.

Ah brilliant! You can’t help but be cheered by the magnificent Victoria. I’ll try and let’s before the day is out
